# The Chat Era is Coming to an End

The chat era is coming to an end.
I’ve basically stopped using ChatGPT and Claude’s default chat for daily work and many AI builders I talk to have done the same.
Instead, we’ve switched to Codex and Claude Code for everything.
The reason is simple. In Codex and Claude Code, I can get AI to edit Google Docs, set up cron jobs, ship features and actually get work done. In ChatGPT and Claude, I can just...chat.
Of course, there's one big problem with all this.
The average person isn't going to want to set up GitHub, understand worktrees, or learn what an API, MCP, or CLI is.
> They just want to ask the AI to do things and have it work.
We're getting an early glimpse of this through OpenClaw and Hermes, agents that live in your favorite messaging apps. You can ask them to "schedule a meeting" or "draft an email reply" and they'll just figure it out. You don't have to see the tool calls and plumbing.
But these agents still require real setup and maintenance. You have to run terminal commands, get API keys, and more. It's a deal breaker for the next billion users.
So the roadmap for good ol' ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini is pretty clear to me:
Do what OpenClaw, Hermes, Codex, and Claude Code can do while abstracting away all the technical stuff.
> Evolve into a personal agent that deeply understands you and can basically do anything online instead of just a chatbot.
I'll close with this.
The conversations I have with my closest coworkers, friends, and family would be incomprehensible to any stranger:
“Hey, can you take care of that thing?”
“Can you call the person?”
And yet these people know exactly what I want because we have years of shared context built up.
That's the vision that I think every chatbot should evolve towards.
> You want an AI that gets you so deeply that you don’t have to write elaborate prompts, install 40 skills, or learn what an MCP is. You can give it the laziest possible instructions and it just works.
Eventually, it doesn’t even have to wait for the instruction — it does the thing proactively because it already knows what you need.

聊天时代即将终结。
我基本上已经停止在日常工作中使用 ChatGPT 和 Claude 的默认聊天界面了，许多与我交流的 AI 构建者也是如此。
相反，我们已经转而使用 Codex 和 Claude Code 处理一切。
原因很简单。在 Codex 和 Claude Code 中，我可以让 AI 编辑 Google Docs、设置 cron 任务、交付功能，并真正完成工作。而在 ChatGPT 和 Claude 中，我只能……聊天。
当然，这一切还有一大问题。
普通人不会想去设置 GitHub，理解工作树（worktrees），或者学习什么是 API、MCP 或 CLI。
> 他们只是想让 AI 去做事情，并且能把事情做成。
通过 OpenClaw 和 Hermes，我们正得以一窥这种未来的雏形，这些代理驻留在你喜爱的消息应用中。你可以让它们“安排会议”或“起草邮件回复”，它们就会自己搞定。你不必看到底层的工具调用和繁琐过程。
但这些代理仍然需要真正的设置和维护。你必须运行终端命令、获取 API 密钥等等。这对未来的十亿用户来说，是一道无法逾越的门槛。
所以，在我看来，老牌的 ChatGPT、Claude 和 Gemini 的发展路线图非常清晰：
去做 OpenClaw、Hermes、Codex 和 Claude Code 能做的事，同时把所有技术细节都抽象化处理。
> 进化为一个个人代理，它能深刻理解你，基本上能在网上做任何事，而不仅仅是一个聊天机器人。
最后我想说这一点。
我与最亲密的同事、朋友和家人之间的对话，对于任何陌生人来说都是无法理解的：
“嘿，你能搞定那件事吗？”
“你能给那个人打个电话吗？”
然而，这些人非常清楚我想要什么，因为我们有多年建立的共同背景。
这就是我认为每个聊天机器人都应该朝之进化的愿景。
