---

You've been learning wrong your entire life.
In fact, most of what you've learned is useless. You'll never use it again in your life.
I'm someone who has an obsessive personality.
Every few weeks, I'd have something that completely consumes me.
5 years ago, it was perfumes.
I was 19 and broke, but I still managed to spend over $5,000 on perfumes. I had over 20 bottles (most of which I later gave away). I was convinced that I wanted to start my own fragrance company to the point that I was looking up programs in Italy so that I could become a perfumer one day.
At 20, I taught myself data science and programming while I was doing my engineering degree from scratch.
At 21, I was convinced that I wanted to stay in academia. I joined 2 research groups (while I was still doing my undergrad), enrolled in a master's program once I graduated, and went all in on engineering.
At 22, it was fitness. In the beginning, I was so addicted to weightlifting that I was training 2-3x a day. It wasn't ideal for muscle growth, but I didn't care. All I wanted to do was train.
At 23, it was a one-person. This is by far my biggest addiction. There is so much to learn when it comes to it:
- Sales
- Writing
- Automations
- Offer creation
- Communication
- Email marketing
- Content creation
- Client acquisition
- Product development
Now, at 24, I'm obsessed with one-person business, spirituality, running, and weightlifting.
That's all I do all day long.
I either read about ideas I find interesting, or I'm writing about ideas that I'm obsessed with, or I'm in the gym moving some heavy-ass weights, or I'm out running.
In short, because of my obsessive personality, I developed a knack for picking things up quickly.
I don't just want to talk about how you can learn faster, but also how you can remember what you learn for years to come, and how to create new, unique knowledge.
Because now, we live in the age of AI. Every month, things change. New skills come to the stage, old skills are phased out, jobs disappear, and new jobs that we never once thought of appear.
And your ability to learn quickly and adapt is everything.
Because in this way, you can never be replaced by AI. You'll simply adapt to whatever environment you live in.
So in this letter, I want to share with you a few ideas.
The first is that I want to talk about everything with learning and how you were taught how to learn was in fact, completely and utterly useless.
The second I want to share with you the process of how to learn any skill or topic in a week
Lastly, I want to share with you a concept that I discovered recently that has changed how I approach everything I do in life.
Let's begin:
# I - Everything that is wrong with the current educational system and society
Schools don't actually care if you learn a subject or not. All they care about is stuffing your mind with information (that you'll probably never use or even remember after a test).
They care about you taking standardized tests, increasing the country's average, and the country's ranking across the world for who has the smartest students (which are all based on who can memorize the most instead of testing you on your actual understanding).
The current learning education system's operating system is this: “Don't question what we teach you, just do as we say.”
This is because the current school system was created by factory owners during the Industrial Revolution.
They wanted trained, highly specialized workers to work the machines in their factories. Essentially, what they wanted was robots, but they didn't have the technology to create the robots, so they turned humans into robots.
True learning requires you to think deeply about the topics and proofs.
Schools don't allow you to question what they teach you. Because if you question it too deeply, you'll fall behind, repeat your year, and be labelled as a failure.
> Schools killed the desire of understanding and learning in people.
Universities don't actually prepare you for a job anymore. Qualifications are a thing of the past. They are obsolete.
The new credentials are your skills and public resume (social media).
Most degrees are bullshit degrees.
They are degrees where your work is judged by other “experts”, which is just another code word for a person who was too scared to go out of the system and challenge what he was taught. An “expert” is someone who did what he was told for decades.
Having the title of “expert” only impresses your boss (who is following orders of his own and trying to please his own boss).
A Value Creator does not care about your degrees.
They care if you can get the job done, if you have high agency, if you have high creativity, and good judgment. Those skills can't be taught in schools, as Naval would call it: specific knowledge.
Specific knowledge is knowledge that cannot be taught in schools but only taught through apprenticeships and through real-world experience.
High-value degrees are degrees where your work is judged by Nature or free markets.
- Engineering is a high-value degree because your building either stands or it doesn't
- Programming is a high-value degree because your code either runs and produces the right output, or it doesn't.
- Science is a high-value degree because your theories are either correct or they're not.
If you truly want to learn, you must go slowly. You must stop at every claim people make and stress test it.
Not many people have the willpower to do it. Most people just accept the first answer they come across and hold it as absolute truth.
This is why most of what people are shallow and have surface-level knowledge. They have not spent the time and effort to integrate that knowledge and develop their own perspective on it.
This brings me to my next point...
## II - The world is filled with intellectual idiots
There are 3 main types of people in this world:
1) The Ignorant
They don't understand a topic.
They also don't have an opinion (or their opinion is of that of the public). The ignorant also have no desire to learn or to improve.
They are comfortable in their own little delusional world.
2) The Intellectual Idiot
This is a concept I got from Nassim Taleb, but I want to adjust it slightly.
To me, an intellectual idiot is a person who learns for the sake of learning, not to benefit from what they're learning or benefit society with their knowledge.
They care more about sounding smart than actually being smart.
Most intellectual idiots don't have any skin in the game.
But they are the ones who constantly tell you:
1. What to do
2. What to think about
3. How to speak
4. How to act
5. Who to vote for
6. What to read
7. What to listen to
I can keep going, but I think you get the idea.
The intellectual idiot has a lot of information and facts that he can reference to sound smart, and usually, he fools people with it. But when it comes to actually applying that information in a real-world setting, they don't know what goes where.
They lack wisdom.
> Wisdom is your ability to correctly apply the right piece of information in its right situation.
3) The Value Creator
This is what the intellectual idiots hope and aspire to be like.
The Value Creator has knowledge and also has direct real-world experience. He is someone who actually has skin in the game.
So when it comes to leading a group, making key decisions, and teaching society, they do it from a place of competence.
The key difference between the Value Creator and the Intellectual Idiot is wisdom.
Wisdom is everything. Without it, what you're learning is just mental masturbation.
# III - How to become intelligent again
Facts are second-order to direct personal experience. This is why creativity is so valuable. Nobody can teach you how to be creative.
Reading the most popular books, latest scientific papers, or the most viral podcasts isn't a substitute for first-hand experience.
If you don't have experience, you're more likely to generate and say surface-level ideas, narratives, and opinions.
If you want to find the truth, look for experience.
Understanding is not a binary process. It's not as simple as “yes or no”. It has layers of depth which is only developed through experience.
Here is how you can master any skill in 2 weeks.
## 1) Create a vision
Before you begin to learn, you must know what the purpose of your learning is.
Are you learning a topic for the sake of learning? Or are you learning because you want to achieve a specific outcome?
Goals prime your mind. They tell you what to look for.
When you don't have a goal, you engage in linear learning. It's mental masturbation. Because you get to consume a lot of information, but you never get to use it because you don't know where to apply it to.
To know what piece of knowledge to apply and where, you'll need to live in the arena.
You need firsthand experience.
Instead of Googling “best skills to learn in 2026”, create a vision for your life. The perfect day that you could live day in and day out without getting bored.
From that vision, reverse-engineer the series of goals you need to complete to achieve that lifestyle.
Let your vision guide your learning.
## 2) Outline a project
From your vision, you can reverse-engineer the steps you need to take and the skills you need to acquire.
The best thing you can do is to create projects.
A project is a series of hierarchical goals.
They are outcome-based and are extremely hard to lie to yourself about the progress you're making.
You either built the product or you didn't.
You either launched the offer or you didn't.
You either posted the newsletter or you didn't.
When creating a project, you want to make sure you're playing at your level.
If you're level 7 trying to complete a level 100 mission, you'll get frustrated, anxious, and quit.
If you're level 100 doing quests that are for level 3, you'll get bored.

You need to choose something that is just outside your reach to create a healthy dose of stress to narrow your focus.
## 3) Don't memorize, connect
As you go throughout your week, your mind is primed with a goal.
This will keep your mind alert to any relevant piece of information that will help you achieve your goal.
When you come across a relevant piece of information, don't write it down and try to memorize it.
Your mind is not a vault. It's a spider web.
Each piece of information is a node. The lines connecting these nodes together are the paths you use.
- Big nodes = deep in knowledge
- Small nodes = shallow in knowledge
- Thick paths = a connection you frequently use.
- Thin paths = a connection you've made once.
You can't learn because you're too concerned with repeating what schools taught you.
You're too busy trying to be “factually correct” instead of actually learning.
Learning is a dynamic process. You must set a desired goal, act, fail, reflect, and iterate.
The way most people “learn” is by taking notes.
They would watch a tutorial, write a bunch of words down, highlight, use different colors and make it all look pretty, only to never look at it again.
Notes are a waste of time.
Why?
Because they're linear. They only serve you in that exact context.
But life doesn't work that way. An idea you learned from marketing can apply to relationships. A spiritual practice can be applied to businesses. You can transfer what you learn in the gym to real life, business, and relationships.
Everything is connected to each other.
When I was studying civil engineering, I would learn about transportation and roads and how to predict/reduce traffic.
From that, I learned how things can be applied to game theory. From game theory, I understood how people make decisions, and I could transfer all of that to business and even relationships.
Life is a giant spider web where everything affects everything else.
Even with my writing now, I can see how different ideas are connected.
A lesson from fitness can be applied to business. A marketing concept can be applied to relationships.
Here's how my Eden (my writing/second brain app looks like):

You can't learn because you're not spending effort to integrate the piece of information to your web. You can't see how it connects to the bigger picture of life.
> If it's important, you'll remember it. If you need to write it down, it isn't important.
When you find a solution to a problem, you have now gained new skills for your toolbox.
Use your current understanding of life to come up with your own proofs, conclusions, and theories about the same problem. Or try to extrapolate what you learned to the wider world and see how it connects with everything else.
## 4) Distill your learning with society
If you truly want to master something, you must write about it and teach it to others.
This requires a certain level of intellectual maturity that most people don't possess. Because most people are too concerned with “looking” more intelligent than actually being one.
Being intelligent means knowing how much you don't know. It means admitting that even though you know a lot, you are at the same time aware of how little you actually do know.
You must not be afraid of appearing “stupid” in public or what the world thinks. This is why I truly believe everyone should be writing a weekly newsletter where every week you find an interesting idea you want to learn more about, explore, and understand, and do everything in your power during that week to learn about it and synthesize what you've learned in a coherent newsletter.
Don't start a newsletter to make money from it (although you can). But start a newsletter so you can use it as a vehicle to discover the world, learn about it, and understand it.
The fastest way to test your knowledge: Teach your topic to a 6-year-old without using any jargon.
Richard Feynman had such a great fundamental understanding of math that he could take you from basic addition and subtraction to calculus in just 6 pages with one continuous logic.
This is extremely hard to do because it requires you to understand your topic on a fundamental level (which most people haven't). This is why you need to write more about your topic to understand it.
You need to gain real-life experience.
The only way you can do it is to live in the arena.
## 5) Inject your perspective
Your goal isn't just to learn. Your goal is to create unique knowledge.
Every person eventually becomes a philosopher.
Everyone is trying to live “the good life”. Everyone's definition of “the good life” is different. This is why you need to create your own philosophy and explanations.
Use existing knowledge to build and create new knowledge.
When you're learning, write from your own perspective. When you're sharing your discoveries and theories with the world, leverage principles from persuasion, storytelling, and marketing to make it interesting for others to read.
Do what you love, but study marketing, sales, persuasion, human nature, and game theory.
Learn the skills that help translate what you have inside of you to the outer world. Learn the skills that spread your ideas, get your work discovered, induce behavior change, and make the world a better place.
## 6) 10,000 iterations, not 10,000 hours
Most people don't have 10 years of experience. They have 1 year of experience repeated 10 times.
The true unit of mastery and learning isn't time spent. It's loops completed.
The way AI models were developed is through learning loops.
Science, for a matter of fact, is built entirely through learning loops.
Learning loop is just another way of saying Trial and error.
You set a hypothesis, design an experiment, isolate as many variables as you can, get results, analyze, adjust, repeat.
This is why you must always pause, reflect, and iterate.
It's extremely easy to get sucked into a robotic cycle, doing the same tasks day in and day out, sucked into a robotic cycle, doing the same tasks day in and day out.
If you truly want to improve, learn faster, and master a skill, you must always iterate. You must become a student of life.
This is very hard to do because it means you must put your ego aside and be honest with yourself.
After I hit publish on every newsletter, I immediately tell myself: “I could've done a better job.”
But this is the beauty of life.
You are always learning. Always improving. Always evolving.
Can you imagine living a life where nothing changes?
What a boring life that is!
# IV - Live in the arena
Most of the learning happens on the job.
You learn by doing. When you do, you create the desire to learn which leads to learning. And there's also the learning that comes from the doing itself.
To become a great writer, you must write.
To become a great painter, you must paint.
To become a great marketer, you must find a product you believe in and market it.
Feedback from other people is usually fake. Awards are fake. Degrees are fake. Compliments from your friends are fake.
The only true feedback you get is from nature and free markets.
Your airplane design either flies or it doesn't. Your product either sells or it doesn't. You cannot manipulate the laws of physics or free markets, which means the only way for you to truly get good at something (and know that you're good at it) is to live in the arena. To build something of value and sell it in free markets.
“But Hussain, I don't have experience to start.”
Well, how are you supposed to gain experience?
To gain experience, you must start. If nobody will hire you or will want to work with you, work for yourself. Become your own boss.
Why do you always need to work for someone else?
You now live in the most interesting times. You have access to AI. AI has lowered the barrier to entry to almost any field now.
You have the smartest and most patient teacher. It can meet you exactly at the level you're at.
You can build anything, do anything, become anyone. The opportunities are now endless. Which is both a bad and good thing.
It's bad because it means people are now drowning in AI slop.

Just because you can create more, it doesn't inherently make it more valuable. Because of this, people will naturally go to the #1 app and get it to avoid all slop which leaves everyone else (who's trying to do the same) fighting for scraps.
But there's also an upside to AI.
Because every person is unique, it means there are infinite desires to be fulfilled, infinite niches, infinite markets.
So you can absolutely be the biggest player in a small pocket of the internet and be very profitable.
How do you do that?
By getting in the arena.
You're going to try everything.
You're going to learn a bunch of skills, try hundreds of business models, and build a ton of products, and through the process of elimination and chasing your genuine curiosity, you'll find what you're naturally good at.
The only way you can do this is by getting in the arena.
I'll leave you with one final thought:
> You receive knowledge at the level you're at.
If you're at level 5 and you read a book that's intended for people at level 100, you'll only understand concepts at level 5 and nothing more (maybe level 6 if you're lucky). But you're never going to understand it fully because you're not at the awareness level to understand it.
Which is why you need to live in the arena.
Because you can read more about the topic and have AI explain it to you, but you'll only internalize the lessons and truly understand them once you have direct feedback.
Get in the arena.
Thank you for reading.
Enjoy the rest of your day.
Hussain

这是我的 Eden(我的写作/第二大脑应用)的样子:
