## Day 17 of 30: Controlling the output through storyboards
Before a single scene of an animated film gets made, the whole movie already exists. It hangs on a wall as rough drawings, one card per shot. Directors argue with the wall, tear cards down, redraw them, and reorder the story. Only when the wall works does anyone start the expensive part.
That wall is called a storyboard, and as of today your agent offers to build one before every video you ask for. Day 17 is about the new Storyboard flow in HyperFrames: what storyboarding is, why every serious studio does it, and why having your agent do it changes what you can trust it to build.

## The blind spot in AI video
AI video generation skipped pre-production entirely. You write a prompt, the machine disappears, and the first thing you see is a finished video.
That means every note you have arrives at the most expensive possible moment: after the build. Wrong story, wrong order, wrong emphasis, and your only tools are re-prompting and re-rendering the whole thing. You have been the director who never got a wall.
(video drops here: the old way, prompt to finished render)
## One prompt, one board
Invoking it is one sentence. Ask for any video the way you always have, and say you want to storyboard it:
prompt:
```
Use HyperFrames to build me a launch video for my website. I want to storyboard it first.
```
Any storyboard phrasing works and locks it in. Before building anything, your agent settles two run-shape questions: storyboard or one shot (your prompt just answered that one), and automation or companion (run the pipeline end to end, or build it together). Then it opens the board for you:
```
npx hyperframes preview
```
Studio opens in your browser with the Storyboard tab live. The board refreshes every 2 seconds as work lands.
## Now your agent storyboards first
Say storyboard, and the wall appears in Studio as a live board that fills in three passes, each one more expensive than the last, each one waiting for your sign-off before the next begins.
Pass 1: the plan. Your whole video lands as cards: one per frame, title, what happens, how long it runs. Pure story, zero design. Rearranging it takes minutes.

Pass 2: the sketch. Every card fills with a wireframe carrying the real words, placed where they will actually live. No color, no motion, no polish. This is layout truth, and the board fills in as each frame lands.

Pass 3: the build. Full design, real assets, and motion land on the layouts you already approved. The agent dresses the sketch. It never redraws it.
(video drops here: the board filling in, outline to built to animated)
## You direct with sentences
Every card on the board has a comment box. Type a note on frame 3, submit, and only frame 3 changes. The other frames hold still exactly as you approved them.
(video drops here: the comment round-trip, one card redrawing)
This is the part that makes it a real storyboard and not a preview. The wall is not just something you look at. It is something you direct.
## The output
Every screenshot in this guide came from one real run of this flow, and this is the video that walked off that board: planned as cards, sketched as wireframes, revised by comment, and built on the approved layouts.
Output:

## Why this is a game changer
Feedback moves to where it is cheap. The three passes are three chances to catch a problem while fixing it costs minutes. By the time anything expensive happens, the story, the layout, and the copy have each been approved. In the launch run of this feature, four classes of defects (fonts, a contrast failure, a runtime error, a caption occlusion) were caught and fixed before the render. The render stops being a gamble and becomes a formality.
The board is a deliverable. A confirmed storyboard is a valid place to stop. Pitch it, share it with a client, hand it to a teammate, and build later. You can now buy a plan without buying a video.
It is all plain files. The board is STORYBOARD.md in your repo, and your comments land in a small JSON file next to it. Edit the markdown by hand and the board updates. Check it into git and your whole team sees the same wall. Nothing is trapped in a UI.
It remembers. Every answer you confirm becomes that project's default, and confirm the same answer in two different projects and it promotes to your personal defaults, with a receipt naming exactly where you confirmed it. Freeze an approved run as a recipe and the next video of that type skips most of the questions entirely: the first launch-run video asked 8 questions. The second asked 3.

## The Unlock
Ninety years of filmmaking wisdom just became a default behavior of your agent. You see the video before it exists, you direct it with sentences while changes are cheap, and you only pay for the build once, on a plan you already approved. That is pre-production, automated, and it is the difference between prompting and directing.

```
Use HyperFrames to build me a launch video for my website. I want to storyboard it first.
```
```
npx hyperframes preview
```
