## TL;DR
I ran /last30days on Garry Tan three times over the last week to make sure the picture held up. It did. Garry is the president of Y Combinator. He is also, based on 30 days of Reddit, X, YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Hacker News, GitHub, and live API pulls, the tech CEO shipping the most open-source AI code on the public internet right now.
Two MIT repos. 93,658 combined stars. 160 pull requests merged by him personally across his repos in 30 days. 216 commits. A YC video that did 43,743 views in 24 hours. "MCP sucks" heard around the world. And the operational job at YC is ticking along at 14 percent month-over-month growth with the biggest batches the program has ever run. This article is the evidence.
## 1. 🛠️ gstack, at 82,504 stars, is the toolkit other toolkits get compared to
gstack is Garry's personal Claude Code setup, open-sourced under MIT. 23 opinionated tools that turn Claude Code into a six-role engineering team: CEO, Designer, Eng Manager, Release Manager, Doc Engineer, and QA. As of this morning it sits at 82,504 stars, 11,973 forks, 504 watchers, and 432 open issues.
> "Comment GSTACK and I'll DM you the link. Garry Tan, president of Y Combinator, open-sourced his Claude Code setup. 23 tools that turn it into a full team - CEO, designer, engineer, reviewer, QA. 66K stars on GitHub, MIT license, free."
@yury.ai on TikTok, representative of the short-form dev wave teaching gstack install-by-install. r/ClaudeAI's stars tracker had gstack growing at about 3,300 stars per day last week, outpacing both Everything Claude Code at about 3,100 per day and Superpowers at about 2,600 per day. r/vibecoding users started calling the finish line: "Garry Tan gstack will soon overtake ECC and Superpowers in github ★." r/whaaat_ai went the other direction and wrote the "I stacked gstack, Superpowers and Compound Engineering together, they solve three different problems" post. Either reaction is the same signal: people are using it.
## 2. 🧠 GBrain shipped April 10 and cleared 11,000 stars in 14 days
GBrain is the second MIT repo, launched April 10 and described by @grok on X as "your own private 'cognitive armor' AI." It is a personal AI memory system backed by PostgreSQL plus pgvector, storing people, companies, deals, meetings, calendar events, and emails as Markdown files in a Git repo, auto-enriched overnight with vector search. Live GitHub stats: 11,154 stars, 1,330 forks, 42 watchers, 231 open issues. 14 days old.
> "Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan open-sourced his personal AI knowledge system. gbrain is long-term memory for AI agents. Everything you know - people, companies, deals, meetings - stored as Markdown files in a Git repo. While you sleep, it scans your conversations, emails, meeting transcripts. Enriches entities, creates cross-references, builds a knowledge graph."
@github.awesome on Instagram (24,449 views, 485 likes) and the same creator's TikTok (8,717 views, 328 likes) are the most-watched explainers. The "while you sleep" framing is the sticky bit. Most agent memory systems store what you told them. GBrain processes the inbox and the calendar while you are offline and wakes up smarter than it was the night before.
## 3. 📊 The GitHub Pulse: 160 merged PRs, 216 commits, nearly every day for 30 days
This is the section people asked for. These are fresh numbers from the GitHub API pulled this morning, not screenshots.
In the 30 days ending April 24, Garry personally authored and merged:
- 105 PRs merged to garrytan/gstack - plus 5 external merged contributors (snowmaker, sensdiego, mvanhorn, evansolomon, byliu-labs)
- 54 PRs merged to garrytan/gbrain
- 1 upstream PR merged to openclaw/openclaw
- 160 merged PRs total across his repos, author=garrytan
Commits over the same window:
- 111 commits to gstack (235 lifetime to the repo)
- 100 commits to gbrain (94 of them Garry's, basically the entire history since the repo is 14 days old)
- 5 commits to gbrain-evals, the benchmark harness he shipped alongside
- 216 commits total across the three repos
The quality bar is not a rubber stamp. gstack has 258 PRs closed without merging in the same 30-day window, and gbrain has 86. That is a project with heavy community activity and an actual merge filter. Daily activity is nearly continuous: April 10 was GBrain launch day with 21 commits, April 12 had 17, April 9 had 12, April 22 had 8. The longest gap in the window is two days.
One more number for context: gstack's all-time PR count is 889. Nearly a third of every PR the repo has ever seen came in this one window.
## 4. 🎬 "How to Make Claude Code Your AI Engineering Team" did 43,743 views in 24 hours
The Y Combinator channel posted the gstack walkthrough on April 23. In the first 24 hours it pulled 43,743 views, 1,755 likes, and 112 comments.
> "GStack is an open-source toolkit built by YC President and CEO Garry Tan that turns Claude Code into an AI engineering team with skills for office hours, design, code review, QA, and browser testing. Use it with Claude Code or Codex or Cursor. It's free and open source."
That is the video's own description. The comment thread is the kind of thing every dev tool wants: people asking which skills to install first, people pasting their own configs, people tagging their CTOs. The "How to Build the Future" back catalog on the same channel keeps getting cited by founders in the last 30 days too. The channel is doing double duty this month - YC's official content plus Garry's personal shipping log.
## 5. 📱 Dev tools are now being evangelized on TikTok and Instagram
This is the part old-school tech X is still catching up to. Multiple short-form creators independently picked up gstack and GBrain and ran them to their own audiences in the last 30 days. Roll call:
- @yury.ai on TikTok - the "23 tools, full team" gstack explainer
- @thelostjamaican on TikTok - the "gstack just cut AI bills 42 percent, Garry Tan shipped it MIT-licensed" cost-cut framing
- @github.awesome on Instagram and TikTok - the GBrain "while you sleep" reel, 24,449 views on IG alone
- @kodekloud on Instagram - 6,743 views on the "MCP is dead, or is it?" breakdown
- @brycent on Instagram - 40,286 views on the 200-startups-per-batch YC interview
- @thebestfounders on Instagram - the "sell to the biggest enterprises" founder-advice clip that kept spreading
The pattern: people who teach other people how to code now learn about new tools from short-form video. gstack and GBrain are the two dev tools this wave is actively teaching right now.
## 6. 🎯 "MCP sucks" and the tooling debate it ignited
Garry's one-liner moved a real industry debate. From his X post, the exact words:
> "It (MCP approach) eats too much context window, and you have to toggle it on and off, and the auth sucks."
The quote landed because the math backed it up. @kodekloud's Instagram walkthrough laid out the case cleanly: "MCP loads every tool's full description into your context window BEFORE you even prompt. GitHub MCP alone = 50,000 tokens gone. That's not a protocol problem, it's a scaling problem. More context = more noise = worse reasoning." Perplexity's CTO Denis Yarats posted a parallel position the same week. Scalekit's 75 head-to-head tests measured 4x to 32x token overhead for MCP vs direct APIs. Cloudflare ran the math on a standard MCP exposing their 2,500 endpoints and landed at 1.17 million tokens consumed just to describe the tool surface.
Garry's post was the match. The industry data was the dry grass. The "MCP vs CLI" debate that owned r/mcp, r/ClaudeCode, and the tech-tooling corner of X for two weeks came out of these five sentences.
## 7. 🏗️ YC itself is at 200 startups per batch and 14 percent month-over-month growth
Under all of the shipping, the day job is running too. @brycent's Instagram interview (40,286 views, 1,577 likes, 37 comments) captured the operational headline of the month:
> "I chatted with Y Combinator President Garry Tan about YC accepting 200 startups per batch and having 14 percent month-over-month growth, highest ever."
@thebestfounders surfaced the companion advice clip, representative of the "ignore the tech-Twitter noise, the content is good" countercurrent: "big companies aren't actually slow, the best ones move on a dime." That is the advice Garry kept repeating to founders this month. It plays on TikTok and Instagram better than it plays on X.
## 🔑 Key Patterns from the Research
Ship receipts, not slides - two MIT-licensed repos in a single 30-day window, 93,658 combined stars, fully auditable
Agentic engineering is now CEO-scale - 160 merged PRs in 30 days while running a 200-startup batch is a new kind of job description
TikTok and Instagram are real dev-tool distribution - five independent short-form creators taught gstack or GBrain to their audiences this month
"MCP sucks" moved the tooling debate - a YC CEO post plus industry data aligned the CLI camp in one week
YC is shipping too - 200 startups per batch, 14 percent month-over-month, biggest batches ever
The merge filter is real - 344 PRs closed without merging across gstack and gbrain in the same window the quality PRs got in
