## Stop Making AI Clips. Start Directing AI Films.
Most AI video I scroll past is a showreel of beautiful accidents. One stunning shot, then another, with nothing linking them. Each clip can be great and there's still no film.
<video controls preload="metadata" poster="/doc/7545/image/img_4be05b89c178.jpg" src="/videos/0949.mp4"></video>
For my September Adobe Firefly campaign I wanted to try the harder thing. I didn't want clips. I wanted a film.
Last Days of Summer is 30 seconds long, with 18 shots and three spoken lines. It's the final days of an impossible summer, beautiful, nostalgic and increasingly strange. It starts as a warm memory, slowly becomes unsettling, and then ends abruptly.
Here's how I made it with Firefly Boards, Firefly image generation and Seedance 2.5.
1. Build the world before you build a shot
Everything started in Firefly Boards. Before I made a single key frame, I needed to know what this world was and what its rules were.
[

The first rule was pink. A woman watches the sea through an empty pink television frame. Pink fur blows across a clifftop. A tower of pink blocks rises out of the water, and a coral sun sinks behind a swimmer. The pink never changes. The world around it slowly does.

The second rule was the era. I wanted it to look like a late-1970s art film shot on real 35mm, with grain, halation, faded colour and vintage glass that's slightly imperfect.
2. Generate a lot, keep a little
Some of my favourite generations never made the film. The pink car sinking into a lake full of wildflowers, the giant spiders around a washing line, a gold skull in a pink wig and a two-toned robot mask all looked great on their own. But a film needs shots that connect, not just shots that impress.

For every image I asked one question: what happens next? If I couldn't picture the shot that followed, the image didn't go in.
In the end, nine key frames became the eight locations of the film.

3. Don't cut just because you can
When you can generate any angle you like, it's tempting to cut all the time. Resist it.
My rule for the edit was simple. Never add an angle just because coverage is available. Every cut had to reveal something new or intensify the image before it. If it didn't, the shot stayed on screen.
So the strongest compositions are left to breathe. The film opens on a single slow creep towards the woman at the television frame, with nothing but the wind in her hair and the sea churning beyond. The pink tower gets one extreme wide shot, with water crashing round its base and a slow optical zoom. There's no explanation.

4. Cut on discovery
The quick cuts come only when something happens that earns them, like a sudden movement, a discovery or a change in rhythm.
On the clifftop, the wind pushes the pink fur one way, and then a section of it moves the opposite way. We cut close as something passes underneath, then cut back as the old man turns his head.

In the fur field, a woman trails her hand through the landscape. Something moves quickly past her fingers. There's a quick cut as her fingers recoil, then another to her face as she stops and looks down.

Every burst of cutting follows one continuous action. Movement carries across each cut, with no restarted gestures and no disconnected inserts.
5. One splash, three angles
The umbrella sequence is the film's sudden change of rhythm, straight after its stillest moment.
A macro shot shows the pink umbrella against a blue sky. Water hits it. From the side, the water explodes across the fabric. Then there are sunlit droplets hanging against the blue. That's three connected views of a single splash, and for a moment the sound of the water drowns out the music.

The sparkling droplets then match-cut into sunlight moving across the pink fur, and the story moves on.
6. Give every shot its own film stock
The easy way to get consistency is to put one grade over everything. I did the opposite.
Each location keeps its own grain, colour, lens and exposure. The umbrella is bright summer macro. The fur field is soft and degraded, with blooming highlights. The woodland is muted and faded. The sunset is heavily pushed telephoto footage with coarse, dancing grain and a dusty coral sun.
It feels like a single film because every shot shares the same era and palette, not because every shot looks identical. That's how real archive footage feels, with different cameras and different days but one memory.

7. Three lines are enough
The voice is a mature British man, quiet and intimate, speaking only three times in the whole film.
"I remember the summer ending."
"We thought it would last forever."
"Then one morning, it was gone."
There's no explanation and no closing line to wrap it up. The music follows the same arc as the voice. It starts as a nostalgic analogue requiem of piano, cello and a faint wordless voice, turns darker and less resolved, and then stops altogether as a pink ghost on a bench slowly turns its head towards the camera.

8. The last sun
The emotional centre of the film is one long, unbroken telephoto shot. A man stands chest-deep in the water, facing an enormous setting sun. The water lifts his shoulders, and he slowly breathes out. The sun sinks almost too slowly to notice.

Then, at the end, we come back to him. It's the same grain, the same lens and the same coral light, but the sun is almost gone.
The edit tightens with every cut. He takes one step forward. A closer shot shows the water rising around him. On an extreme long lens, only his head is above the glittering surface. Then there's empty water, where the last edge of the sun slips below the horizon.
Hard black. Only the sound of the water remains.
The disappearance is the ending.
The takeaway
We're past the point where generation is the hard part. The tools can make almost any image you describe. The skill now is the same one it has always been in film, which is knowing when to hold, when to cut and what to leave unsaid.
Stop making AI clips. Start directing AI films.

<video controls preload="metadata" poster="/doc/7545/image/img_4be05b89c178.jpg" src="/videos/0949.mp4"></video>
