It's never been weirder or more fun to make software. We're living through an age where models do new things each month, delivery timelines keep compressing, and the very material of software is evolving into a new, undiscovered form. I’ve long loved The Squiggle as the truest expression of the design process, and things have never felt more squiggly.
Designers have always (and will always) answer the question “What’s worth making?” The world changes but the purpose stays the same: Marry a deep understanding of humanity with the imagination of possible futures, develop conviction of what should exist, and rally the people around you to bring it to life together. This last step feels more important than it’s ever been: with the plummeting cost of software, the most important decisions are not “Can we make this?” but “Should we?”. Design facilitates collaborative decision making through whatever medium necessary (words, pictures, diagrams, discussions) to narrow a possibility space fast enough to jump aboard the speeding train of software production and delivery.
But how to do this in a world of rapid change and compressed timelines? We make tools. We build new tools, and push our existing ones, to sharpen ideas in our own minds, share them with others, and facilitate the collective refinement of our best ones.
In the past few months of testing, we’ve found Claude Design to be one of the fastest tools for taking the seed of an idea and getting it “good enough” to move discussion forward. Why?
- Focus on rendering speed cuts precious minutes off each iteration and thus the full exploration
- One consistent format for exploring ideas and output format, whether you're sharing with a designer, PM, or exec
- Using our design system reduces the distracting noise that early wireframes often have, focusing a discussion on the nucleus of the idea
- Like Claude Code, it asks clarifying questions that sharpen and expand early ideas, then generates variants we wouldn’t have thought of
- It pulls more of the team into exploration earlier — as active participants, not just reviewers.
- Building in HTML provides tremendous benefits and emergent behavior, from testable prototypes (we’ve cut the time from “new idea -> 5 revisions -> sharing internally for feedback” to hours instead of days), one click handoff to Claude Code, to general portability and composability with any tool that uses this universal format
What else do we use besides Claude Design? Everything! Documents, slide decks, Slack threads (oy, the Slack threads), Figma, Figjam, Claude Code, paper and pencil – they’re all in regular rotation. We’re all too early in this journey for one tool to do everything. Claude Design is a research preview, intended to give an early glimpse of our thinking and iterate in the open. Many ideas in this version are our first / best current guess at a solution, but expect a lot of experimentation in the coming months. (To wit: we’ve shipped over 20 PRs since launch last week.)
I don’t imagine Claude Design (or any tool) will ever replace all the tools around it. The Squiggle is too squiggly for that, and creative people have their own preferences on how to explore and refine ideas. Most notably, Claude Design doesn’t yet address that last mile craft and delight that differentiates the best products from the OK ones. As with many things in our practice, we’re just not sure where or how that gap closes: better models, better tools, a more focused design skillset, or (most likely) some combination of the three.
We hope that Claude Design is one tool amongst many for people who make software to explore and debate ideas. Ultimately the only thing that matters is whether the final thing was worth making at all.
